National Monuments, Historical Sites, Etc.

We love national parks and in addition to the 60 National Parks,  there are also 357 other units within the national park system. These include: National Monuments, National Historical Parks, National Memorials, National Military Parks, National Battlefields, National Battlefield Parks, National Battlefield Sites, National Historic Trails, National Preserves, National Reserves, National Lakeshores, National Seashores, National Rivers, Wild and Scenic Riverways, National Scenic Trails, National Parkways, and National Recreation Areas. There is one area of the National Park system set aside primarily as a site for performing arts. Sometimes the nomenclature used for national park units is confusing, although in general, the designation given a specific unit depends on the resource/s to be protected and the size of the area involved.

All in all, our national park system offers a tremendous variety to explore.
